How to Add Sea Moss to Your Daily Diet.

Just when you thought you'd seen it all, step into the rise of sea moss as a breakthrough beverage item. For those unfamiliar with it, sea moss, also known as Irish moss, is excellent in both flavour and health benefits. It is a macroalgae that is generally found in the waters of the Northern Hemisphere, on the rocky European and American coasts. It has branched stalks of firm texture, however, its consistency is soft and cartilaginous. Intrigued by the thought of 92 minerals and don’t know how to fit in your day to day eating routine, well it’s good that we are here to help and guide you through a few creative ways to boost up your breakfast, smoothies and snacks.


The slimy seaweed sparked a stream of colorful photos and recipes spread across Instagram feeds. According to Pinterest's 2020 Trends Report, search volume for "benefits of sea moss" increased 380% from 2018 to 2019. And even Kim Kardashian recently tweeted to her fans in a Q&A that she adds sea moss into juice for breakfast. This seaweed has been used for many years as an alternative medicine in Jamaican and Irish cultures. But it is now becoming quite popular in the health and wellness industry. Thus, those who consume the food have benefits that range from immune support to mood and emotional improvement.


This is what allows the colon to function better, which heals the lining of the intestine and rids it of harmful bacteria. It is also rich in certain important minerals, such as magnesium and iron, which promote healthy bodily function. Plus, it's packed with folate (great for prenatal health) and protein. However, even though they're typically seen as a great vegan source of omega-3 fatty acids (crucial for brain and heart health), you shouldn't rely solely on sea moss to hit your quota. - Two tablespoons of the food provide approximately five milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids. However, the recommended intake is 250 to 300 mg per day for healthy adults. Adults need 140 micrograms (μg) of iodine a day. Most people should be able to get all the iodine they need by eating a varied and balanced diet. If you are following a strict vegan diet and do not eat any fish then you may want to consider taking an iodine supplement or mixing burdock root and bladderwrack to your sea moss. Similar to other sea vegetables, sea moss is a natural source of the mineral iodine. Research posted to the Journal of Medicinal Food notes that sea moss contains about 47 mg of iodine per gram.


How To Consume Sea Moss.

Once you have prepared your sea moss, you can store it in the fridge for up to four weeks and use it in a number of recipes. Sea moss acts as a thickening agent in recipes, making it ideal for:


  • Smoothies

  • Soups

  • Stews

  • Baked Goods



Blueberry smoothie

  • ½ cup blueberries

  • ½ lime

  • 1 cup of ice

  • 2 tbsps sea moss gel

  • 1 handful watercress

  • 1 cup coconut water

How to Prepare

Even though this recipe has more ingredients than the previous ones, it’s still easy to make. The strawberries and blueberries can be either fresh or frozen. Be sure to squeeze the lime into the blender and mix the juice with the other ingredients.
